As we consider the “least of these,” are we thinking of people who are lesser than we are? Maybe the people who don’t have as much materially, or have fallen into difficult times? Maybe so, but listen to how Jesus also used the term “least”.

In the Sermon on the Mount, when He was talking about the Law and the commandments, Jesus said, “Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” Hmm, sounds like our actions and our example matter, doesn’t it?

Later, He talks about John the Baptist, in Matthew 11, when he said, “I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” And that sounds like heaven has a different measuring system than earth, wouldn’t you say?
